# Set up the Kameleoon Slack agent

> Install the Kameleoon Slack agent in a Slack workspace, and review the permissions it requests.

When a question about an experiment comes up in a Slack channel, someone has to leave the conversation to find the answer in Kameleoon. The Kameleoon Slack agent is a Slack app that answers questions by parsing Kameleoon's documentation and codebase. Setting it up takes permission to add apps to your Slack workspace, plus an invitation to each channel where your team wants it. Teammates then ask the agent questions in Slack and get answers without leaving Slack.

## How the Kameleoon Slack agent fits into your workflow

* **Permissions:** Check what the agent can read and post before you approve the install.
* **Install:** Add the agent to your Slack workspace with the **Add to Slack** button or a shareable link.
* **Use in a channel:** Invite the agent to a channel, then mention it in a message.
* **Use in a direct message:** Create a new message to the agent, then send your question.

## Before you begin

* **Workspace access:** A Slack workspace where you can add apps, or a Slack administrator who can add them for you.
* **Kameleoon account:** You don't need one to use the agent.

## What the agent can access in your workspace

Slack shows these permissions when you install the agent. Each permission sets what the agent can read or post in your workspace. The install requests all six permissions.

| Permission | What the agent can do |
| - | - |
| `app_mentions:read` | Read messages that mention the agent in conversations the agent is in. |
| `commands` | Add shortcuts and slash commands. |
| `chat:write` | Post messages as the agent. |
| `groups:history` | Read messages in private channels where the agent is a member. |
| `im:history` | Read direct messages with the agent. |
| `assistant:write` | Act as an App Agent. |

The agent reads messages in a private channel only after someone invites it to that channel. Invite the agent to a private channel only when your team accepts that it reads the messages there.

## Install the agent in your workspace

You can install the agent in two ways. The **Add to Slack** button on this page and the shareable link both open the same Slack authorization page. Use the button if you can add apps to your workspace. Use the link if a Slack administrator must install the agent.

### Add the agent from this page

Use the **Add to Slack** button to install the agent in a workspace you can manage.

[![Add to Slack](https://platform.slack-edge.com/img/add_to_slack.png)](https://slack.com/oauth/v2/authorize?client_id=3308204133.11497023331330\&scope=app_mentions:read,commands,chat:write,groups:history,im:history,assistant:write\&user_scope=)

1. Click **Add to Slack**.
2. Select the workspace where you want to install the agent.
3. Review the permissions on the Slack authorization page, then approve them.

### Share the install link with a Slack administrator

Use the shareable install URL when you can't add apps to your workspace, so that a Slack administrator can install the agent.

Copy the URL and send it to a Slack administrator.

```text theme={null}
https://slack.com/oauth/v2/authorize?client_id=3308204133.11497023331330&scope=app_mentions:read,commands,chat:write,groups:history,im:history,assistant:write&user_scope=
```

The administrator opens the URL, selects the workspace, and approves the permissions.

## Use the agent in a channel

In a channel, the agent responds to mentions only where it's a member. Slack doesn't deliver mentions from a channel the agent isn't in, so invite the agent to each channel before your team mentions it there.

### Invite the agent to a channel

Invite the agent to each channel where your team wants to use it.

1. Open the channel in Slack.
2. Type `/invite @Kameleoon`, then press **Enter**.

### Ask the agent a question in a channel

Mention the agent in a channel message to ask it a question.

1. Type `@` in the message box and select **Kameleoon**.
2. Type your question and send the message.

If the agent doesn't reply, check that you invited it to the channel.

### Remove the agent from a channel

Remove the agent from a channel the same way you remove any app from a channel in Slack. Slack doesn't deliver mentions from a channel the agent isn't in, so after you remove it, the agent stops replying there.

## Ask the agent a question in a direct message

Message the agent directly to ask a question without posting it in a channel.

1. Create a new message to **Kameleoon** in Slack.
2. Type your question, then send the message. You don't need to mention the agent with `@`.

The agent replies in the same conversation.
