# Personalize widget content

> Insert custom variables and dynamic values into the text of an element so that each visitor sees content that fits them.

Personalized content changes the text in a widget for each visitor. Instead of a fixed message, a text field can show the value of a custom variable for each visitor.

## Insert a custom variable into a text field

To insert a custom variable into a text field:

1. Select a text element.

2. In the **Text content** toolbar, click the three-dots menu, then click **Custom variables**.

3. Select a custom variable that you already created. To set a fallback, turn on **Define a default value** and enter the value. The default value appears if the custom variable's value is undefined or null.

4. Click **Validate**.
